Random thoughts: In Copenhagen, stacks of bicycles stand against the station railings. A few have fallen and lie on top of each other like failed children in a birthday party game. A fashion gathering spills out of a gallery like swill gushing from a well-fed pig's pierced cheek. Security keeps the tanned and wealthy from the pale and curious. I see a sign of a giant spark plug attached to a building. I move on.
As we drive into Switzerland, I see the tops of mountains dusted with snow even though the sky is bright as can be. The scenery rivals that of the Japanese countryside. I have never seen The Sound Of Music all the way through, but the expanses of greenery and the open valleys remind me of the opening scene of that movie, only without Julie Andrews warbling. I am not a big fan of musicals, although I would recommend a film called The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, starring Catherine Deneuve. In it, the characters sing every line, however mundane or short it is, so the whole effect is quite strange, but melodic! It also has lots of bright colours and girls in fancy raincoats so it comes highly recommended...
So, we are on our way to a smallish, sold out club date in Zürich tonight; yet another night in unchartered territory for The Park. The coach we live on now has tiny windows in each of our bunks, allowing me to gaze out at the gigantic lakes that creep around the mountains. The blue of water is unique to Northern Europe from what we have seen over the past few weeks. Scandinavian water has the same purity and compared to British lakes, the effect it has is otherworldly. I can't compare it to anything else, but it seems that if you dived in, you would be purged in some way. We have just passed a cooling tower with a rainbow painted on it, which is something you would never see on any of the industrial estates near where the band live.
I think it's great to experience what we have, but I won't deny that we miss our loved ones. When you get to the end of a tour, your thoughts start floating towards the people you are close to, and we are only human. Except Lukas. I think he might be half machine. He's a very efficient lad!
Oh well, end on a light note, that's what I sometimes say... Bon voyage, Paul And The Park |
