Lines and Arthur Russell

Madrid.

Milan.
I met some kind people outside the venue, one of whom gave me a lovely Smiths badge, which is now pinned on my borrowed winter coat. I remember the first time I wore that coat, in warm Newcastle rain. I remain grateful for the loan, and so much more.
After the show.
A girl didn't know I was in Maximo Park and she asked me for a backstage pass that I had just been handed. I asked her why she needed it and she replied, "I have to meet Maximo Park". I thought it was funny. I didn't give her the pass...

Vienna.
We stumbled on a robot cocktail convention.
Inventions. Scalextrx and Circuit boards.
Warm orange punch in the drifting snow.
The Museum Quarter at night. Regal buildings surrounded by dark, shaped foliage that look like abstract defence mechanisms.
How night disguises the certainties of daylight.

Nuremburg.
Snowflakes like summer flies drifting aimlessly, driven by the breeze. Catching my peripheral vision.

Two, blue tarpaulined trucks stand back to back aligned with the edge of the kerb. Twinned.
Arthur Russell fizzes up through the wires of my headphones. An improbable trombone duel takes place between left and right the next song begins with a popping rhythm.... "Want to be strong/ in your arms. 'Cause kissing you is something new/for you and me both"... Meanwhile, a synth breathes warmly, providing patches of notes. This man's music would keep me from my eventual grave and it can accompany me to the end as well.

An average illness has surrounded my throat and nose and it has turned into a stand-off between it and me. I never thought I would be a singer where such a trivial thing would be a barrier to doing my job. I suppose it's lucky I don't see it as a job or I might worry more about the future. Last night in Munich, I was sore at the end of the show, but happy that the audience enjoyed it.

I called up a friend today, very briefly, just to hear their voice. I felt some alleviation, whatever that means.

See you soon,
Paul And The Park
