Flotsam and Jetsam

08 Mar, 2006
Hiya,
It’s been a while since the last entry because we have stopped touring, and our personal lives are run of the mill... practicing and what-not.
So.. here are some notes which never became fully fledged entries:

I went to see the new Michael Haneke film, Hidden, and it was devastating.

Blank yet gripping, it was truly revealing in its investigation of the lies that continuously grease our passage through life.

The truth can hurt.

At home, finally, I can hear the untutored voice of the folk singer Lal Waterson. It’s a song she wrote called To Make You Stay. She just goes for it, soaring yet informal. It could be about anyone needing shelter for the night. And, for that matter, begging someone to be stay... “She flew away in the night-time/From under me right arm”.

We are in a seafront hotel in Portsmouth.

Wind troubles the window-frame to creaking point.

I wander along the pavement, atop the unusually high kerb, towards the sea-wall.

The waves are constantly being sucked back and forth across and through the assorted pebbles. The sea scuttles along towards my feet rather than the usual smooth passage that occurs on sandy beaches. A dead bird is washed up, kept fresh by the salty white froth. White.

The same white of the gulls on parade; so equally spaced...

On the underground in London. An overheard conversation:

“I like being unique. I'm the only punk to wear them.”
A tanned lady takes a picture of a group of punk rockers. On second glance, I realise she just has reddened cheeks from her make-up.

Barely distinguishable chants fill the rounded cartridge of the the train. The police are abused, but there is no-one in an official capacity around here as we whir along beneath the capital.

Posh accents prevail. I have rarely heard such an ‘establishment’ accent being used to proclaim an opposte identity.

‘Oi’ has been inked on an arm. Stella spills across the floor.
“If you don't like what I say then don't listen. There's nothing wrong with being loud.”
“If you're gonna spew, spew in my hat.”
I am reminded of Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson in The Young Ones.
I leave the train.
