Down Below Deck |
 |
| 20 Jul, 2006 |
I am a stowaway beneath deck, buried in the hull of this ferry, as we make our way across the Irish sea like a smooth white whale. I don’t think I’m supposed to be down here on this bus, but I needed the extra sleep. I don’t know how I made it from 9pm to 5am last night, but my memories are strung out and evenly spaced like lights on a pier, so I guess I was awake for most of that time. The dark bus seems ghostly.
I crawled from my bottom bunk, with my pores open from the heat, but somehow clogged by my own dirt. An off-putting, regular bleeping occurs and the floor gently undulates from the sea’s movement. It feels like the set of Poltergeist, due to a TV switching itself on and off, barely registering a picture before dying again, under its own command. Through the wedge of dim skylight come sounds that throw the scene into yet more hellish disrepair. A tired, trapped dog yelps with the same, alarming frequency as the now numerous bleeps emanating from various external sources. I imagine a similar heat in the poor animal’s car and wonder what the owner was thinking.
My headphones are broken and resemble a semi-swatted insect, with skinny wires and snapped, black plastic sat on my pillow. The plastic lightens at the breaking point as if it has been burnt.
